Caterpillar Black with yellow band above, green side stripes with white speckling. Seven rows of short spines.
Host / Food Nettles
Broods 2 or 3 broods
Habitat Stream beds, riversides, beaches, meadows, roads and trails.
Range North to Canada except Alaska, south to Southern California, Oklahoma and West Virginia.
Notes

The Tortoiseshell is usually the first butterfly to emerge in the Springtime. They can often be seen on warm midwinter days.
