Black and white wings with white back, chest and belly.White cheeks intersected by black
eyeline. Male has red patch on nape.
Voice: "peak" Also a loud, steady rattle. Drums with its bill against bark
producing a fast series of percussive noises.
Range: From Alaska and the southern two-thirds of Canada
throughout most of the United States except treeless deserts.
The Hairy Woodpecker is much larger than the Downy Woodpecker which shares it's range. The
Hairy is less likely to be seen at feeders and is more of forest bird. The photo's of this
female Hairy Woodpecker is the first seen at our feeders in seven years.
