Barred black and white above, buff below and on face.
Male has red crown and nape; female red nape only.
The reddish patch on the lower abdomen which gave this bird its common name is rarely
visible.
Voice: "chuck-chuck-chuck" Also a repeated "churr"
Range: Eastern half of the United States
These birds are attracted to our suet and sunflower feeders all year round. One female
'Gabby' is usually heard before she is seen. She likes to talk all the way down the tree
to the feeder.
She "churr" loves those suet cakes!
