Red Admiral - Vanessa atalanta |
Size | 1¾ - 2¼" |
Egg | Green barrel shaped |
Caterpillar | Mottled black, yellow, tan and brown. Warty with spines |
Host / Food | Nettles, hops |
Broods | 2 broods in north, perhaps more south. |
Habitat | Just about everywhere, forest edges, rivers, shorelines, roadsides, meadows and fields. |
Range | North America, except artic to Central America |
Notes | We always seem to have these guys around early mornings and late afternoons when they sit soaking up the first and last rays of the sun. The Red Admiral in the picture is pretty beat up, possibly from heavy thunderstorms we had a couple of days before. |
